What is nearpod?
Nearpod is an website where one can create interactive presentations as a way of teaching content and assessing students. Teachers can upload pre-existing PowerPoints and add certain activities such as polls, quizzes, videos, drawing boards, and web content to further engage students in the learning. The tool is very easy to students to access and interact with. Students go to nearpod.com and look for the box to enter a specific code. Each presentation has a letter-number code that corresponds to each powerpoint so all students have to do is enter that code to access the presentation. Once all the students are connected, each student has the presentation on their device but is controlled by the teacher and from there the teacher can move to each slide according to their needs within the lesson.
How i used nearpod
As stated above, Nearpod is super easy to use and to add to a pre-existing PowerPoint, PDF, etc. When I contacted my virtual co-op, she told me that she wanted a math lesson created that talking about adding and subtracting double factors that add up to 20. One great tool about Nearpod is that there is an explore tab where you can browse what other educators created and after browsing, there was a presentation that modeled perfectly what I was trying to create for my virtual co-op. I created a very similar presentation on PowerPoint, adding some pictures from this pre-existing presentation, and uploaded it to Nearpod. From there, I added some activities within the presentation (short answer, fill-in-the-blank, and drawing boards) that students could interact with on their own device.
NEARPOD IN THE CLASSROOM
Overall Experience:
I absolutely loved using Nearpod. I love the fact that it enhances a normal PowerPoint and encourages students to engage within the embedded activities instantly drew me into the tool. Students now of days need certain aspects to encourage them to stay focused and having small activities throughout the presentation helps students to that.
SAMR Model
This tool fits very well within the SAMR Model under the Augmentation component. The reasoning for this includes first that the PowerPoint is first substituted into the Nearpod create lab and then becomes augmentation when the tools or web content are added. Augmentation means that when technology acts as a direct tool with functional improvement. The improvements that Nearpod presents in the fact that students are present and active through activities during the entire presentation.
Future Classroom
I can definitely see myself using Nearpod in my future classroom. After talking to my virtual co-op, who is a big fan of the tool, she said that she uses Nearpod for all subjects throughout the day. Once I talked with her, I was inspired to use the tool in my future classroom. Along with enhancing Power Points, Nearpod also has a feature where you can create virtual reality presentations that can be used as a virtual field trip. Students can explore different areas of the world and learn so many new things all by staying within their classroom.
Why 3C?
This entire tool focuses on Danielson's 3C component which focuses on engaging students in learning. As stated many times, there are a number of activities that a teacher can add to enhance focus and engagement for students. Every student is going to be different in the way they learn and for students who are more visual, Nearpod is the perfect tool.
