what is it?
Designing student assessments correctly is crucial for teachers to know how to assess their students in their understanding on content that is going to be most beneficial to them. There are three different types of assessment that teachers use to best meet their students needs. Diagnostic testing or otherwise known as pre-testing helps the teacher gain knowledge on information that they are going to teach to their class to get a general idea of basic knowledge in the subject. Formative testing is typically given during the time when students are in the middle of a unit or a concept where the teacher will give assessment such as questioning that is not graded. It helps the teacher know that the information that is being taught is being explained and understood correctly. Summative testing is done after a unit is complete that is always graded for accuracy. This type of testing helps the teacher know that all the infromation in a certain amount of time has been taught and studied and understood by students.
Designing assessment that is beneficial for students in your classroom is important because it is a part of the teacher's job to track students in their learning and that they are understanding the material. Like many of the other components, a lot of the component success depends on the type of students that are in your classroom and mixing up the different kind of assessment will reach more of your students to be successful.
